The method of linear programming has been the most potent force towards the practical use of optimization techniques. The method was the first technique which would handle optimization problems in a large number of variables, and its ready implementation in a computer program made its use a routine procedure. Its general efficiency has led to various proposals for converting non-linear problems into a linear framework ; some of these will be examined in the next chapter.
