ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The growing all-round insecuritization in Papua has affected the indigenous Papuans, the thousands of migrants, Indonesia, and its immediate neighbors, as well as the international community with important stakes in the territory. The existence of the Papuan problematique is laden with dangers of immense proportions. The Papuan conflict and the manner in which the various actors and stakeholders are likely to react will have implications for the future security architecture in the region. As part of the attempt to gain global attention, the Papuan separatists have launched a coordinated domestic and international campaign to propel their grievances to global attention. Both moral and realpolitik approaches have been adopted. From the moral standpoint, principles of democracy, self-determination, justice, independence, and minority rights, as well as human rights violations have been emphasized.
