ABSTRACT

This chapter compares the views and reported experience of the mothers and fathers interviewed. It then considers how the relationship between husbands and wives is related to their attitudes to, and use of, contraceptives. Fathers were asked to recall for each of their children how they felt when they first found their wife was pregnant, and whether, round the time their wife became pregnant, either of them were using any method of birth control. More fathers than mothers, 15 per cent compared with 8 per cent, thought the cap could cause difficulties or symptoms or harm the woman's health in some way. Apart from the discrepancy over withdrawal agreement between the samples of fathers and mothers on methods of contraception ever used and using now was good. The mothers and fathers who were interviewed were asked whether they would describe the sexual side of their marriage as very satisfactory, fairly satisfactory, not very satisfactory or unsatisfactory.
