ABSTRACT

The yardstick conception of time imbued the Progress families' perspective with a sense of accomplishment much like that of the golfer when he "shoots under par" or of the jockey when he makes better than average time for the course. Regardless of the child's condition or handicap, the recovery outlook of family members took a more optimistic turn when he returned home. Doctors and physiotherapists in general agree that the amount of post-convalescent recovery that can occur through physiotherapy is inversely proportional to the amount of cellular destruction and resultant muscular incapacity wrought by the polio virus initially. Rehabilitation must therefore be addressed to the whole breadth and complexity of the person's life situation so that his mind and body may be made to serve rather than nullify each other. The greater frequency of prayers and the increased church attendance of several of the parents in the Stationary Group can also be regarded as a strategic appeal to other channels.
