ABSTRACT

The George Peabody Donation Fund was obviously motivated by his desire to help the poor inhabitants of the foreign city where he had resided and prospered for so many years and it was certainly international in character. The purpose of the Russell Sage Foundation was "the improvement of social and living conditions in the United States of America", and its charter gave the greatest latitude to its trustees in carrying out the purpose. The foundations established by Andrew Carnegie and John D. Rockefeller were also pioneers, and these two dominated US foundation giving in the period between the Civil War and World War I. Carnegie established the Carnegie United Kingdom Trust in Britain in 1913 with an endowment of $10 million. The Trust deed specified that the original trustees named and their elected successors had to be residents of the United Kingdom.
