ABSTRACT
This paper is based on sixteen months of fieldwork during 1957-58 in a Chinese (Hokkien) agricultural community on the west-central coastal plain of Taiwan. The village was then composed of about 650 persons in 115 registered households, each an economic unit. The villagers are descendants of Chinese immigrants who came from the coastal region of Fukien province, on the mainland of China, some 170 years ago.
