ABSTRACT

Morals are an important part of any community life, since morals concern the way people behave, and they need to behave morally if they are to live well. Living well means living to the fullest of people's powers, and their powers are at their fullest when they are exercised with excellence. Such moral virtues, however, are not automatic but must be taught and learned from youth up, so that people learn first from elders what rational behavior is and then, by repeated practice, are able to discern rational behavior directly themselves. If music is a chief tool of moral education, the family is its chief locus. Attacks on the family and the conditions for its flourishing are proliferating, and proliferating absurdly in the name of freedom. Two such attacks are same-sex marriage and abortion. Abortion has become commonplace almost everywhere in the modern world and is widely regarded as a basic right of choice for women.
