ABSTRACT
The Book of Isaiah contains some of the most beautiful language of the Hebrew Bible. First Isaiah makes two important political predictions. He warns both Israel and Judah against relying on Egypt: Alas for those who go down to Egypt for helpand who rely on horses, who trust in chariots because areand in horsemen because they are very strong, but do not look to the Holy One of Israelor consult the LORD! Second Isaiah attempts to assure the Jewish people that they, with God's aid, have the ability to return to the Promised Land. Perhaps the promise to guard Jerusalem is conditional, although Third Isaiah does not spell out the conditions. According to Abraham J. Heschel, Isaiah was fundamentally distrustful of alliances. "Isaiah could not accept politics as a solution, since politics itself, with its arrogance and disregard for justice, was a problem.
