ABSTRACT

The Gospels present some genealogies of Jesus. The most famous comes at the beginning of Matthew 1:1–17, the first of the some gospels. Luke is the only Gospel to mention the census that leads Joseph to take Mary to Bethlehem. "In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world should be registered". However, Joseph A. Fitzmyer also notes that by referring to Caesar Augustus, Luke depicts the emperor as God's agent in assuring that Jesus is born in the town of David's youth. The story of the hearing and trial as related in the Gospels is probably inaccurate. Clearly, the Gospels are designed to cast as much blame on the Jews as possible, and to do as much as possible to absolve the Roman authorities. Josephus's account does not clearly establish the responsibility for Jesus's execution.
