Botharerelative,notabsolute,concepts.Ingeneral,thedegreeof honestydesiredandrequiredorexpectedinagivencontextvaries withthecircumstances,asdoesthevalueoffreedom.Complete honestymaybedisastrous,asGalileodiscovered;completefreedommayinspireirresponsibility.Buthonestyintermsofthecomprehensionofthelistenerisindispensabletotheinternationaldevelopmentofthesciences;withoutsubstantialfreedom,science stagnates.
