ABSTRACT

The story of Daniel Pearl has seemingly come to an end. Daniel Pearl’s death in a way illuminates the outlines of change, both in the world and in the United States’ attitude as the only remaining superpower. The position and the positioning of America in the world under George W. Bush and his team are clearly beginning to change. Instead of the deployment of massive military forces, at least so far, new anti-terrorist wars are being fought with CIA special forces. Intelligence is carefully controlled. The US is beginning to be seen by many other nations as a kind of cold-eyed Roman Empire that scorns diplomatic and political means, the better to have its own way quickly with the world. The Washington Times tells the story of how the British military services are building 'sponsored reserves' of ex-servicemen to defend civilian companies overseas.
