ABSTRACT

The position of each member of a family is defined by his sex and age. Men consider themselves superior to women: “Woman is merely the helper of man, man is always the first. As know, man is the masterpiece of creation. God created Adam, shaping Eve from his rib. The head, lord, and ruler of the household is usually the oldest married man or widower, the gazda, “the head of the family.” This position is due to him on account of his sex, since “man is the first person in the house—its esteem depends on him, and he is the head of the family, ” and also because he is the owner, the proprietor, of the family estate. The gazdasszony, the wife of the gazda, shares his troubles and is a companion to him. The children are the “ornament” of the house, of gazda and gazdasszony.
