ABSTRACT

This chapter briefly describes the current psychiatric scene in Chicago and places two hospitals generally within that local setting. The psychiatrists invited to describe Chicago's psychiatric scene perceived it along ideological dimensions. Two Catholic psychiatrists, who were interviewed together, were antagonistic to the analytic community but declined to be identified with the somatic position because they could see some importance in psychological concepts and wished to incorporate selected aspects of the psychoanalytic orientation into their own. The modal staff member was a candidate at the Psychoanalytic Institute, taking courses and treating control cases, a process that generally takes four to six years. The most important relationship is between Psychosomatic and Psychiatric Research and Training Institute (PPI) and the Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute, which comprises several types of link. Considerable overlapping exists between PPI's attending staff and the Institute's staff or trainees.
