Sensation and Measurement

The early efforts to measure sensation followed indirect routes. Plateau used partitions into equal-appearing contrast steps; Fechner used units of resolving power or just noticeable differences, the JND. The idea that measurement must involve the counting of steps or units still prevailed in the 1850's, and the psychophysicists of that date were looking for something to count.
