ABSTRACT

Mazahuas from El Nopal are conscious of only some of their most important values, and are able to reflect and talk about a portion of what is meaningful to them. The rest of their values are implicit and noticeable to the investigator only if he is sufficiently skillful and lucky to detect them. The most implicit area of meaningfulness among Mazahuas from El Nopal is probably the area of their family life. Though not everything consciously chosen becomes automatically meaningful in any society, both the Ejido and the School are as meaningful to Mazahuas from today's El Nopal as is the Traditional Government, though in a different way. Even without counting Las Pastoras, about forty-four of the estimated 125 adult women in the village participate every year in auxiliary politico-religious activities connected with the functioning and change of the Traditional Government.
