ABSTRACT

The distinction is between discourse about the "Laocoon" and discourse about Hellenistic style. All critical discourse is either primary or secondary. The ideal of unicity is specified by a rule for each. For construction judgments the resolution is fairly obvious: the question being how to construe an object presented for criticism, the object will be differentiated and understood as such in virtue of the complex of relationships which that object sustains in the matrix of art and of society. It is time to assess in what direction the attempt to offer an alternative to a normal version account of artistically relevant judgment may have led and to assess the force of the specific analyses presented. Practical judgment is judgment in a practice. The most suggestive way in which artistically relevant criticism functions in the sense of judicial decision appears on considering the "adjudicative" process of judgment in law.
