ABSTRACT

I stopped at Valognes only to say good-bye to some of my friends; several of them had tears in their eyes as we parted, for there was a widespread belief in the countryside that the deputies would face great dangers in Paris. Several of these worthy people told me: “If the National Assembly is attacked, we will come to defend you.” I am sorry to remember that at the time I thought these merely empty words, for they actually did come, they and many others, as will be seen later on.
