ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the limitations on an individual's medical treatment options and characterize various arguments both in favor and against the regulations. It shows restrictions on freedom to procure medical treatments by way of regulations requiring prescriptions and licenses. Modern science has produced a variety of treatments and medicines. Some of these drugs and treatments are available over-the-counter or on a walk-in basis. Thus, one can go to local grocer and pick up a bottle of ibuprofen, acetaminophen, or aspirin, in the same way one can procure a deep-tissue massage with little hassle. Indeed, people need prescriptions and referrals from medical professionals to gain entree into the wide world of powerful medicines and medical procedures. There are some medical treatments and drugs that people are legally prohibited from receiving even if a doctor would formally recommend them. These treatments are often illegal across the board.
