ABSTRACT
The Festival ended and the Assembly members walked away making scornful remarks; that night people laughed bitterly in privacy about the new Supreme Being. In dens and tightly shuttered dwellings where religion had long been abandoned and some very curious habits had developed, ceremonies and rites, orgies and blasphemies continued. The reduction of Christianity had been accompanied by the rise of cults, of Satanists and perverts, and these are not easily deflected once they emerge. The cult of Virtue had been overlaid now with a Supreme Being but everyone was still threatened.
