A stream of carriages poured from the Hall of Minor Pleasures toward Paris to spread the news that King Louis had capitulated to the forces of change. The English ambassador, Lord Aukland, wrote London that this was ". . . the greatest revolution recorded in history ... relatively speaking, one which was achieved with very little bloodshed." His optimism was generally shared.
