ABSTRACT
On another level the ideas of the Enlightenment and the example of the new United States served as a guide for a hopeful future. The National Assembly had, after all, come into being with the help and participation of the King himself. It deliberated at a moment when the schools of France had been largely secularized; the Church itself had turned liberal and the nation was ready for change.
