ABSTRACT

This chapter is concerned w i t h the role of personality i n producing social change and w i t h the effects upon the ind iv idua l of changes i n the groups and communities of w h i c h he is a part. T h e large organization or the small communi ty offers some special advantages as a un i t for study. The un i t is not so large that the necessary observations cannot be made, but is large enough and sufficiently complicated i n its structure so that some generalizations derived f rom its study m i g h t hold for the whole society. W e must, of course, understand and specify the relations of the small communi ty to the larger society.
