ABSTRACT

This chapter determines how the perspective fits globally, how serious leisure perspective fits in this world in the present epoch. It takes up, first, the question of why it is necessary to classify leisure activities. Then the chapter addresses how the Perspective applies outside the West, and thus to the question of what it can offer to the world as a whole. It then moves on to look at leisure and its place in the nonprofit sector. The chapter points out that that serious and casual leisure were among the conceptual tools used by the Commission in analyzing the sport, fitness, and leisure situation in New Zealand and in making recommendations based on their findings. Finally, it underscores the importance of finding balance among the three forms of the Perspective, of finding an optimal leisure lifestyle, and of using leisure education to achieve these goals.
