ABSTRACT

Though variously interpreted, the need for value codes and the existence of ethics is innate in man, innate only in man, innate in all men without exception. According to Freud, even every criminal has a superego censor-mechanism. According to religion, even every criminal has a conscience. Communism and nazism are alike in their main business: total and permanent war upon mankind and the murder of millions of innocents. Without the idealistic framework of ethical restraints, materialism can never achieve its material goals. America's college generations alternate regularly between commitment and sophistication. The Western heritage is not diversity alone nor unity alone but diversity within unity. Being a Christian-Hebraic-Roman-Hellenic amalgam, with inner contradictions sometimes reconciled but sometimes not, the Western heritage allows for a generous dose of tolerant pluralism. Czechoslovakia alone is in a position to show the world how collective economy and individual liberty can be combined.
