ABSTRACT

The Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) of the United Nations Secretariat is a vital interface between global policies in the economic, social and environmental spheres and national action. The Department promotes the integrated and coordinated implementation of and follow-up to the plans, strategies, programmes or platforms of action agreed to at the UN conferences and Summits to achieve policy coherence at national and international levels. The Department's policy advisory services are coordinated with the activities of other programmes, funds and entities of the United Nations at the country level within the context of the United Nations Resident Coordinator System and the United Nations Development Assistance Framework. DESA is also the designated organizational liaison for the accreditation of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in the economic and social areas. DESA has responded by integrating conflict prevention and peace-building into several areas of its activities.
