The Idea of Social Control

When sociology emerged as an intellectual discipline, the idea of social control was a central concept for analyzing social organization and the development of industrial society. I realize that “social control” has taken on pejorative connotations in some sociological quarters. It is also used as a vehicle for social criticism of contemporary institutions, especially for their imputed excessive constraint and surreptitious manipulations.
