ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an overview and propose some advice to socialists who believe that Marxism still has a role to play in the world. It shows that the scale of capitalism conforms closely to Marx's conception. Absolute social insolidarity, the all-powerfulness of capitalist initiative, and the infinity of production were regarded by Marx as principles which no longer had to be investigated. The chapter describes the notions of determinism and freedom that Marx created in observing what was happening in England. In England, for centuries, various social groups have been in a condition of struggle and have ruthlessly pursued their own particular ends without bothering about the consequences their conduct could have on the fortunes of the country. The class which created the wealth of England had much to complain about with regard to the conditions that politics had created for it.
