ABSTRACT

This chapter bases on the experiences and findings of author's research, in addition to the literature cited. It accounts for the emergence of the New Right and of the New Christian Right (NCR) at the national level. The chapter turns to the grassroots battleground over morality and culture in North Carolina and how it was linked to the national arena. It also turns to an exposition and critique of some social science explanations of the NCR. The chapter closes with a somewhat different theory and account of the NCR that views it in terms of a theory of culture change in the contemporary United States. Fervor and activism by a moral community to impose its morality on others with legislation and other forms of pressure can be the result of a variety of motives. The metaphors, language, and symbols of American culture and politics are steeped in the Biblical thought-world of Christianity.
