ABSTRACT

Men generally conform to conventional norms, sentiments sometimes interfere with the routine of living. Sentiments based upon erotic attraction are a perennial source of difficulty, especially when the relationship is proscribed by custom or law. Behavior becomes passionate when there is an inability to control the various behavioral dispositions that constitute the sentiments. Since the outcome of transactions may depend more upon sentiments than upon conventional norms, in each organized group efforts of some kind are made to control interpersonal relations. A common human nature becomes discernible in the typical sentiments that are formed as each person develops stable orientations toward his intimate associates. Among men who know one another on an intimate basis, sentimental considerations temper the rational pursuit of interests as well as conformity with group norms. Since sentimental considerations supersede customs and laws primarily when social distance is reduced, most attempts at social control consist of setting up polite barriers between those who might get into trouble.
