ABSTRACT
Sha˚ra\nê’s writings afford a good picture of scholarly life in the Cairo of his time. The ulama and their problems are seen through Sufi eyes-as are other aspects of Egyptian society and culture. Sha˚ra\nê is virtually the only local source on this subject and since he was in constant touch with the leading ulama, the information he provides is of the utmost importance.
