ABSTRACT

DePaul University, which proudly calls itself "the nation's largest Catholic university," achieved yet another distinction in 2006 when it was named one of the "Top 100 Best Campuses" in the United States for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered students. Catholic college faculty and staff members received help in their commitment to advocating for gays and lesbians on their campuses in 2005 when Santa Clara University hosted "Out There," the first public gathering of gay and lesbian professors from Catholic colleges. The Chronicle of Higher Education pointed out that "gay and lesbian professors have become increasingly visible on Catholic campuses, speaking out on issues like domestic partnership benefits and recognition of gay student groups." Just as DePaul's "Queer Kiss-In" was described by organizers as a way to show how "normal" homosexuality is, a growing number of Catholic campuses continue to battle those who persist in reminding them of the Church's teachings on homosexuality.
