ABSTRACT

When a new generation of Catholic legislators began to assume power in the Democratic Party in the 1970s, Fr. Robert Drinan led some of the most powerful, including Massachusetts lawmakers Tip O'Neill and Ted Kennedy to conform to the culture in supporting abortion rather than their Catholic faith. Orthodox Catholics know that Church teachings on life have been unambiguous, mandating that life must be protected with the utmost care from the moment of conception—and describing abortion as an abominable crime against natural law. There are a number of bishops like Archbishop Wuerl who continue to defy Canon 915 and allow politicians like Ted Kennedy and Nancy Pelosi to publicly misrepresent the Church's stand on abortion, yet appear to be in full communion with the Church by receiving the Eucharist. A frequent offender, St. Joseph's College in Connecticut, honored Sr. Theresa Kane, former president of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious in 2005—an organization that has voiced public support for abortion.
