      ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the culprit of this epidemic: Kondrat Malevannii, undoubtedly a mentally ill person. It discusses in both the disease of K. Malevannii and the psychopathological epidemic that developed under the influence of his doctrine, with the help of the documents and collected information that were sent to psychologist’s hospital. Malevannii is a thin person, with sharp features and sharp manners. Malevannii has always been sensitive to the effect of alcohol; he has suffered for a long time from insomnia, from frequent bouts of grieving, and thoughts of suicide have persistently recurred. Malevannii always talked readily with the physicians. Malevannii explains the appearance of cholera in terms of God’s punishment. Notorious hallucinators and paranoiacs can induce one or another absurd idea in a crowd through suggestion, and this can lead to the development of psychopathological epidemics of a religious character.
