ABSTRACT

The genius of the McDonald's hamburger is organization, rationalization, and specialization. This is all carried to the point of perfection, so that the consumer can have his hamburger with the minimum delay and at the cheapest price possible. The secret is being able to estimate demand so that no hamburgers are wasted— not an impossibility, because the McDonald's operation is supremely efficient. Wimpy provides an undistinguished, perhaps even a regrettable hamburger. The roll which enclosed it had the faintest hint of a crust and was just slightly more substantial than the McDonald's cotton fluff roll. The restaurant chain is named after a gluttonous character in the famous American comic strip, Popeye, and that's just about as far as the Wimpy Bar or Wimpy House goes in terms of resembling anything "American." Wimpy offers a rudimentary hamburger devoid of condiments, except for the onions.
