Signsaboundthatallisfarfromwellwitheducation.'Wbileexpenditureshavebeenskyrocketing-andwillkeepongoingup-the taxpayersaregettingvisiblyrestless.Incommunityaftercommunity acrosstheUnitedStatestheyhavevoteddown,inthelastfewyears, proposalsfornewschooltaxesornewschoolbondsorhigher teachers'salaries.Thesemaybefutilegestures:intheendtheschool taxesdogoup,themoneyfornewbuildingsisprovided-ifnotout ofschoolbonds,thenoutoffederalsubsidies-andtheteachers' salariesareadjustedbycompetitivepressure.Butthegrowingresistancetothecostofeducationindicatesthatthepublicisbeginning tobeconcernedwithwhatitgetsforitsmoney.
