ABSTRACT

NOONEknowingonlytheeconomicfactsandfiguresof1968and of1913-andignorantbothoftheyearsinbetweenandofanything buteconomicfigures-wouldevensuspectthecataclysmiceventsof thiscenturysuchastwoworldwars,theRussianandChineserevolu~ tions,ortheHitlerregime.Theyseemtohaveleftnotracesinthe statistics.Thetremendouseconomicexpansionthroughoutthein~ dustrialworldinthelasttwodecadeshasbyandlargeonlymadeup forthethreedecadesofstagnationbetweenthetwoworldwars. Andtheexpansionhasinthemainbeenconfinedtonationsthat werealready"advanced"industrialnationsby1913-orwereatleast rapidlyadvancing.
