ABSTRACT

The social science literature bearing on urban fun and esthetic enjoyment is not very voluminous. The specific selections are intended to highlight both the paucity of our knowledge about fun and esthetic appreciation in the city and the rich data that could be easily obtained either through interviews or use of the library. An enduring perspective on the city, as noted earlier in the discussion of urban novels, is the city as a feast—a place that provides great enjoyment to natives and visitors alike. There is a considerable and growing interest in the "problems of leisure" in an affluent urban nation—but how that leisure bears on what people do and think when they live in or visit cities has yet to be studied extensively. The potential tourists become aware of mutual interests and thus may band together to prepare for their trip. In touristry, pay is naturally the prime consideration since this is the main reason for working at all.
