ABSTRACT

Republican party is the party of conservatism while the Democratic party is the party of liberalism. It is clear that conservative thought in the United States is divided between the two major parties, and one may either say that both parties are conservative or that there is no conservative political party in the United States. The conservatism of transition, in contrast to its historical statements of policy, balances the liberalism of disintegration. In a day of transition, such as the present clearly is, both liberalism and conservatism become singularly dynamic, but this mutual dynamism is, no doubt, a product of balanced ideological tension, as well as the external forces of political chaos. The constant rebirth of conservatism shows it to be on somewhat firmer ground. The contemporary right is a fluid conservatism that seeks the defense of older and primary values through an acceleration of change in political habits and economic arrangements.
