ABSTRACT
The method was used successfully by some planners in moderate-sized cities, and it Is rumored that it was used with modifications In larger cities. But these were practical applications in planning and nothing appeared in the literature relevant to the work. The most rigorous application and testing of the CBI method for delimiting the the central business district (CBD) that followed the original work is represented by D. Hywel Davies' general study of Cape Town's CBD. Davies began with a discussion of the site and urban setting of Cape Town's CBD. The district occupies the flattest land at the center of the amphitheater formed by Table Mountain and its northeastern and northwestern extensions. According to Davies, a varying quality marked different sections of the boundary. In certain sectors the three boundaries coalesced to form a single line; in these instances he considered the CBD boundary fully acceptable.
