ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses certain additional facets of the central business district (CBD). The CBDs of very large cities seem to be more regionalized than those of smaller cities. The core contains a retail district, the most central of all central places in the geography of retailing, its stores clustered around the 100 per cent location. Manufacturing in the CBD is somewhat like resident population in the area: almost by definition there is very little of either. Though neither CBD concept is likely to include much manufacturing land, we know that typically there is some industry present in the heart of the city and that various location factors are involved. Industries of this sort are mainly concentrated in two groups. One consists of segments of industries producing women's underwear and related trimmings, the other of certain branches of printing and publishing. Certain other industries, such as models and patterns, signs and advertising displays, and games and toys, are included.
