ABSTRACT

The Saudi-Wahhabi factor exemplifies the Sunni dimension of the jihadist axis of evil. The calamity of 9/11 and the fact that to this very day Saudi Arabia is the main financier of religious schools promoting jihad have transformed the American-Saudi relations into one of the most hotly debated and disputed areas of American foreign policy. Ever since the meeting between FDR and King Saud, the relationship between the United States and the Desert Kingdom was equally important for both countries. From an American point of view, the oil wealth of Saudi Arabia and its strategic location provides a sufficiently strong reason for a very special relationship between Washington and Riyadh. From the prospective of the Saudis and Wahhabis, there were two positive developments that happened at the end of the 1970s and beginning of the 1980s. The future trends in the development of Pakistani public opinion are destined to play a crucial role in the war against Islamo-totalitarianism.
