ABSTRACT

Group III was in charge of a teacher trained in science. She was responsible for the physical condition of the children, and the parents came to her for consultation. Many excursions kept the balance between the children's observational attitude and their constructive expression, including music and all forms of art. Seven years of experimentation with activities for age six resulted in a choice of present day occupations as the most suitable subject-matter. The study of occupations as carried on during the year involved observation of seeds and their growth, of plants, wood, oil, stones, and animals as to phases of structure and function of parts or habit of performance, of geographical conditions of landscape, climate, and arrangement of land and water. In all the activities which filled his day, spinning, weaving, cooking, shop-work, modeling, dramatic plays, conversation, storytelling, or discussion, he was vitally interested and constantly absorbed knowledge of materials and processes.
