ABSTRACT

Political scientists are predisposed by the traditions of the field to produce at least a few minds in every generation who think contextually and who in contemporary times are alienated by the fragmentation of universities. This chapter suggests that the problem-solving experience of political scientists contains a valuable clue to an approach capable of moving in the direction of effective integration. Centers of political science could be formed within universities. Centers of political science would encourage sustained attempts to anticipate contingencies. Political science comes to play a crucial role in the clarification of goals and strategies within the decision process, not only for man, not only for such advanced forms of life as are created or discovered, but for the universe as a whole. The chapter summarizes the composition of centers of political science by calling attention to the variety of emphases that must obtain if all five intellectual tasks are to be performed with distinction.
