ABSTRACT
Unlike other settings we've studied that celebrated inspiration and invention because of their thriving seaports, such as Boston and Philadelphia, Oklahoma is landlocked. But it had two resources that set it on a clear course to prosperity, cattle and oil. In the early 1900s oil pools were discovered, and with the explosion of automobile travel, the state, and Tulsa for that matter, became the oil capital of the world. Oklahoma is also one of the largest producers of natural gas. In 1928 Goff and Endacott remodeled the Tulsa Convention Hall. Bruce Goff next major commission was the Boston Avenue Methodist Episcopal Church in South Tulsa. Goff left the faculty of the University of Oklahoma in 1956 and established an office in Frank Lloyd Wright's Price Tower in Bartlesville Oklahoma. Finally one of his last efforts was the Japanese Pavilion in Los Angeles. This is baroque, spiral architecture that is remarkably a precursor to Gehry and Moss ahead of its time.
