ABSTRACT

By looking at Paul Lorenz and Scott Fitzgerald through a concept of identity, we have been able to see the small details of their daily lives as part of a total life-style. We humans are constantly doing something new, but doing it in the same style or manner in which we have done everything before it. We can think through that human mingling of sameness and change by means of a verbal theme and variations. We can think of the sameness as a style or identity theme. We can think of the newness as variations on, and away from, that theme.
