ABSTRACT

Leisure has a unique public image in the West. Probably most people see leisure in both a negative and a positive light. Leisure is sometimes seen as frivolous, as simply having a good time, or in the language of leisure studies, as casual leisure and the quest for hedonism. Leisure is for many reasons, an important consideration for arts administrators. Good administration in this sphere increases exposure of the art and enhances the financial status of the artists displayed. Administrators are therefore key players in the success of many arts occupations. For society, the payoff of knowledge about adolescent involvement in serious leisure could be considerable. L. Caldwell and E. Smith urge that youth be encouraged to gain a stake in mainstream life by developing a commitment to one or more serious leisure activities. Still the prospect of adolescent serious leisure raises some thorny questions.
