ABSTRACT

One of Lenin's first moves was to fully reconstitute Tsektran. At a carefully packed Congress of Transport Workers it was pushed through, startling as this may seem considering Lenin's attacks on Trotsky and the lessons learned about trade unions. The political directorates—which had been so harsh, and which had been joined with the union-Party organizations in December 1920—were recreated in October 1921, but as special sections of the Central Committee. At this time the members of the Workers' Opposition also felt the mailed fist of the Central Committee. The heavy hand of the Central Committee also swatted other unions, and in May 1921 the Metal Workers' Union rebelled. The Eleventh Party Congress was hardly free from internal fighting either, and once again one of the primary issues was the fractional activities of some of the former members of the Workers' Opposition.
