ABSTRACT

The treatment of outsiders and academics in Massachusetts, at least prior to about 1968, was less friendly than in many jurisdictions because of the organizational climate of the Massachusetts politico-administrative whirlpool, as contrasted with the organizational climate in other states. At the simplest level, some organizations may create a climate of generalized suspiciousness, especially of academic investigators. Academics and intellectuals tend to regard themselves as entitled to consideration on the merits, and consequently have created hostility towards themselves, as a result of the organizational climate. Analogously, the notion of organizational climate is a bit like the notion of personality. The closest approach to the notion of organizational climate which we have is probably the description of the differences among villages and towns in a fairly mobile society. One of the most promising lines of attack on the study of organizational climate may be the analysis of novels.
