ABSTRACT

In most cases the founders didn't know the first thing about transforming a debating circle into a movement. The smaller the movement, the greater the possibility of directing it in the proper channels. This movement could still be given the proper impetus, form and goal, a possibility not to be thought of in connection with the larger established parties. The movement was started on its course. Two main developments characterize the growth of the movement from this time to 1924: first, Hitler's ascendancy to supreme leadership both in the party and in the nationalistic circles of Bavaria; secondly, the abortive coup d'etat, the so-called Hitler Putsch. From the first Hitler made the party subservient to the establishment of a movement under his leadership. While Hitler was thus establishing himself as a "leader of men" at the expense of party politics, he was intentionally or unintentionally doing the right thing for the establishment of a movement.
