ABSTRACT

At the core of the concept is the idea of Gemeinschaft, an untranslatable term which combines the meaning of "unity", "devotion to the community", mutual aid, brotherly love, and kindred social values. This ideal has been the wish of mankind since the time it emerged from the primitive stage of tribal civilization, when new communities–townships, nations, empires, not held together by bonds of kinship–began to be formed. Usually in the autobiographies the idea of Gemeinschaft is linked with sentiments or intentions rooted in the personal experiences of individuals. The timeliness of the idea, in view of prevalent conditions, favored his effort and in part accounts for his success. Anti-Semitism was a prevalent sentiment in Germany after the World War. The most frequently occurring source of anti-Semitism was the interpretation given to personal experiences arising from contacts with Jews. While anti-Semitism always was a popular issue in Germany, not all Germans were anti-Semitic.
